Arrangements for |Guests after Shelter closes

Sunday night sees our final shelter of the winter. Sadly, the weather has turned against us, and whilst we are not able to continue operating the shelter, arrangements have been made for our Guests as follows: all Guests have been individually assessed by Lesley, our Senior Project Supervisor, as to their particular needs. Arrangements have been made with the YMCA for certain of our younger Guests, and Hastings Borough Council has been working with us to identify accommodation for those Guests who are particularly vulnerable. Other Guests will be equipped with appropriate clothing, bedding and rucksacks for their belongings, and thermos flasks for hot drinks (hot water is always available at His Place), with the back-up of the Seaview Centre for nourishing and cheap meals during weekdays, and other identified sources at the weekend. As earlier this month, we will also liaise with Hastings Borough Council in their provision of cold weather accommodation should this be required.

The usual feedback arrangements for Volunteers will be advised soon, but it is worth stating at this stage that our many Guests this winter have been unanimous in their appreciation of all the support given by Snowflake, its staff and its team of Volunteers, and the Trustees extend their heartfelt appreciation to all concerned.

Change in the Trustee Board

After many years of dedicated service, inluding being a founder Trustee of the charity, Peter Bourner has decided to 'call it a day' and leave the Trustee Board. Everyone in the Snowflake family is indebted to Peter for his unstinting support over very many years, and we thank him for all he has brought to the charity and the night shelter in particular.

In line with an increased number of enquiries and offers of help, the Trustees are pleased to hold a final meeting at Sussex Coast College, Station Approach, Hastings, on Saturday 27 January at 10.30am. Whilst rather late in the day for new volunteers, all those interested are invited to attend, when we will also be able to give an update on how the night shelter has operated this winter

Snowflake Update January 2018

We are now more than 5 weeks into this winter's shelter, and so it is appropriate to let everyone know about how the project has been going. In summary, we have had more Guests register than this time last year, they are younger, there are more ladies, and there are more disparate needs than we have seen in previous winters:

We have registered 36 separate individuals ranging in age from 18 to 59 years.

The highest number of Guests we have welcomed to the shelter is 18, and the average number is just  over 14

One Guest is ex armed forces, and we have accommodated up to 6 ladies

We are delighted to report that 6 Guests have moved on to suitable accommodation including with the YMCA and into supported living accommodation.

We currently have 205 active volunteers and 7 employed members of staff, to all of whom much appreciation is due. There have been the inevitable teething problems which we are endeavouring to address, and there have been difficulties in allocating volunteers in line with both their individual availability and the shelter's needs. Many volunteers this winter wish to work only once a month rather than more frequently as in the past, but we have managed to maintain the service, and grateful thanks are due to everyone concerned, especially those who have responded to our urgent phone calls when illness or other issues have upset the usual shift allocation arrangements.

Further reports will be issued later in the winter.
